Samsung Galaxy Fold to be launched around September 18: Report

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Fold between September 18 and 20, a media report has said, adding that the South Korean giant will initially produce about 20,000 to 30,000 units of the foldable smartphone. Citing market watchers, The Investor reported that the company would roll out a total of 100,000 units in the Korean market, which will be one-tenth of the entire Fold units planned for global markets.

“Samsung is seeking to tout its technical prowess rather than focusing on high-volume sales with the Fold. The foldable device is also aimed at testing the new market,” Yonhap News Agency quoted an official from a local telecom firm as saying. After being launched in the US and Korea in September, the phone is expected to be available for sale in global markets, including the UK, Germany, and France, the report said. Interestingly, this is the time Apple launches its new iPhones.

Recently, a media report said that an improved version of the Samsung Galaxy Fold had successfully passed all the necessary durability tests, and that the company now believes that the defects in the foldable phone are now rectified. The Galaxy Fold was reportedly undergoing a redesign after early review units of the phone malfunctioned owing to issues with a protective film on the screen. Samsung had to recall the review units. Since then, the launch of the Galaxy Fold has been postponed several times.

Media reports said that Samsung might make the phone available during the holiday gifting season. Samsung has reportedly re-engineered the hinge on the Galaxy Fold to make it flush with the display. The company is also said to have made improvements to the protective film of the screen, stretching it all the way to the outer bezels so as to make it impossible to peel off.
