Microsoft has released the Windows 10 20H1 preview build today. It is available to only to "Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.” The build number 18970 adds several notable features. It is aimed at enhancing the touch experience on 2-in-1 convertible PCs. The new update allows users to enter the tablet mode and stay in the familiar desktop experience without interruption.
A few key improvements include:
Increased spacing between Taskbar icons. Search box on taskbar collapsed into an icon. File Explorer switches to touch optimized layout. Touch keyboard auto invokes when you tap text fields.Microsoft has also made a few small changes to the tablet section in Settings. However, the experience is currently available for a portion of insiders as the tech giant evaluates the quality. The company has marked the design as beta, suggesting it will change and be shaped by feedback. These new changes will trigger automatically when a user removes the keyboard from a device like a Surface Pro.
Along with the changes in Tablet mode, Microsoft is now testing a cloud download option to reset and restore Windows 10 PCs. It will allow Windows users to reinstall the OS quickly without the need of it being installed on the local disk or on a recovery USB drive. A similar feature has existed in macOS for years.
Other improvements include fixes to DWM memory leak, an issue resulting in WIN+(period) closing, two issues that could result in Settings crashing when interacting with options on the Search page, and many more. Moreover, there are subtle changes in the volume flyout, the network flyout, the clock & calendar flyout, and notification toasts.
Microsoft has also made improvements in Narrator reliability. It will now read webpages from the top of the page and not at the main landmark with a fallback to find a paragraph.
